Избранное. 86. South winds jostle them

С ветрами Юга
Прилёт шмелей —
Нектар  — пригубят—
Долой скорей —

Спят бабочки —
Покинувши Кашмир —
Cобрав цветы,
Дарю их мир!

86
South winds jostle them
Bumblebees come —
Hover — hesitate —
Drink, and are gone —

Butterflies pause
On their passage Cashmere —
I—softly plucking,
Present them here!

          Emily Dickinson

Кашмир, Индия – штат на самом севере страны – просторные живописные долины с многочисленными озёрами.

MANUSCRIPTS: This is one of the poems which ED used to accompany a gift of flowers. The copy reproduced above is in packet 83 (Bingham 17b), written about 1859. A second copy (H 320) is in pencil, written at the same time. It is addressed "Mr. Gilbert-" and is headed "Sir-". Sue's brother, Thomas Dwight Gilbert of Michigan, was in Amherst on 25 July 1859. The note evidently was sent with flowers. The text is identical with that of the packet copy.
(Thomas Johnson's Note on Poem 86)
"I think that Dickinson is writing on a deeper level about poetry. There in the garden with its breezes, bees, and butterflies (Dickinson’s oft-used "B" trilogy), are poems waiting to be plucked. And we’ve seen that in quite a few of the poems before this #98 – poems pulled out of the garden as if organically peopled by the jays and bobolinks and bees. The poet plucks them, writes them down, and presents them to us, the reader."
