Быть можно дельным человеком             One can be an efficient person

Вот наш герой подъехал к сеням;          Here our hero arrived to doorstep;
Швейцара мимо он стрелой                Passing the concierge like a wind
Взлетел по мраморным ступеням,           He flew up the marble steps,
Расправил волоса рукой,                Straightened hair by the hand,
Вошел. Полна народу зала;                Has entered. The hall is fully crowded;
Музыка уж греметь устала;                The music has been already tired;
Толпа мазуркой занята;                Mazurka makes the busy crowd;
Кругом и шум и теснота;                There are noise and crush around;
Бренчат кавалергарда шпоры;              Jingle the cavalry guard's spurs;
Летают ножки милых дам;                The legs of lovely ladies flying;
По их пленительным следам                Their captivating steps are followed
Летают пламенные взоры,                By the enflamed masculine eyes,
И ревом скрыпок заглушен                And drowned by the roar of violins
Ревнивый шепот модных жен.              Jealous whisper of fashionable colleens.
