Избранное. 859. A doubt if it be Us

Сомненье, что уйдём,
При нестерпимой боли
Острейших мук Ума
Способствует опоре.

Из Нереальности онo,
Как милости Мираж,
И делает возможной жизнь,
Путь завершаая наш.

A doubt if it be Us
Assists the staggering Mind
In an extremer Anguish
Until it footing find.

An Unreality is lent,
A merciful Mirage
That makes the living possible
While it suspends the lives.

                Emily Dickinson

Прим. переводчика:

1. Стихотворение было написано в начале 1865 годa, за год до смерти Дикинсон.

2."In extreme anguish the possibility that it might not be us suffering enables us to go on living while the possibility, as it were, suspends [our] lives".
                David Preest
3."This poem is a fine example of Emily Dickinson's talent for metaphysical observation, adroitly compressed into eight lines.
An honest and thorough analysis of what we think we know reveals an uncertainty at the heart of knowing. Certainty is the 'footing,' the 'merciful Mirage' which delivers us from 'an extremer Anguish' experienced in the throes of uncertainty. Dickinson's masterful sense of irony concludes that self-deception, 'An Unreality . . . lent,' allows us to overcome the anguish of uncertainty in order to live a stable life -- but in accepting self-deception as the way to stability and security, we merely 'suspend' embracing truth until 'A Doubt,' as it must, returns to reveal the lie of certainty.  An evocation of an universal human experience as only the genius of Emily Dickinson could create it".
