Роза прекрасна по форме и запах имеет приятный.
Болиголов некрасив и при этом ужасно воняет.
Байрон, и Шиллер, и Скотт совершенны и духом и телом
Но безобразен Буренин, и дух от него нехороший
Тихо приветствую мудрость любезной природы —
Ловкой рукою она ярлыки налепляет:
Даже слепой различит, что серна, свинья и гиена
Так и должны быть — серной, свиньёй и гиеной.
Видели, дети мои, приложения к русским газетам?
Видели избранных, лучших, достойных и правых из правых?
В лица их молча вглядитесь, бумагу у руках разминая,
Тихо приветствуя мудрость любезной природы.

A ROSE IS GORGEOUS TO SEE…
Harmony.  Following the ancient poets

Roses are gorgeous to see and their scent is exceedingly pleasant.
Hemlocks are ugly enough and, at that, are disgustingly smelly.   
Byron, and Schiller, and Scott are ideal in heart and appearance. 
YAvlskiy*, however, is baleful, and the smell he effuses is repulsive. 
Quietly and mutely, I honour the wisdom of nature, the gracious.
High is its skill in selecting the best of appropriate  labels:  
Even a blind would distinguish – a hazel, a pig and a hyena
All of them should be, respectively,  a hazel, a pig and a hyena. 
Have you, my children, observed the new supplements to Russian newspapers? 
Have you seen th' designated, the best and th' worthiest, th' Right of the Rightest? 
Stare into th' faces, while th' paper in hands you are crumpling and wrinkling,    
Silently, wordlessly greeting th' sagacity of th' sapient nature.

*  Mr. Burenin's name, a contemporary of the original author, would not mean anything to any of this days' readers.  This has urged the translator to replace it with a fictional one, with no intention to imply the new one to belong to any real or imaginary person.
