I'm not sure about the meaning of "complaint" here. I read it as "shortcoming" rather than "compassion". So my interpretation is "If you have shortcomings you are far from being a saint; but if you have none it means you're not even trying to be one." I may be wrong though, as I said I'm not sure.

Think it is quite possible; at least it does make sense. In fact if I supposed such a meaning I’d surely consider some other variant. I should think it over. Thank you.

Probably Auden combines two meanings of the word – an illness (to suffer from complaint) and an accusation. (If you suffer from slanderous accusations; and if you don’t suffer at all (are indifferent, do not compassionate) “you will not try”).
