Alas, we live this life just once

It's sad there is no second try,
Beneath this single, watching sky.
We only get one life to lead,
A fragile, quickly growing seed.
So many faults I recognize,
Reflected now within my eyes.
Decisions made I still lament,
On paths where my past self was sent.

My memory holds a song of pain,
For choices made when I was young,
I wish I could go back again,
A different future could be sung.
If time allowed a backward glance,
To mend the errors I embrace,
I'd take that single, precious chance,
And put things in their proper place.

Alas, we live this life just once,
No turning back the page we read,
No way to alter consequence,
Or change the words already said.
But God provides a hopeful light,
To make the coming future bright.
Without this faith, what would life be?
Just empty, drifting aimlessly.
