If time allowed a backward glance

My memory holds a song of pain,
For choices made when I was young,
I wish I could go back again,
A different future could be sung.
So many faults I recognize,
Reflected now within my eyes.
Decisions made I still lament,
On paths where my past self was sent.

If time allowed a backward glance,
To mend the errors I embrace,
I'd take that single, precious chance,
And put things in their proper place.
If I could journey back through years,
To banish youthful doubts and fears.
I'd find the younger me back then,
And start my early life again.

Alas, we live this life just once,
No turning back the page we read,
No way to alter consequence,
Or change the words already said.
Yet God bestows a hope anew,
A reason for the days ahead,
His promise helps to see me through,
Dispelling doubt and rising dread.
