Быть стариками — не простая штука.
Не все умеют стариками быть.
Дожить до старости — ещё не вся наука,
куда трудней достоинство хранить.

Не опуститься, не поддаться хвори,
Болячками другим не докучать,
Уметь остановиться в разговоре,
Поменьше наставлять и поучать.

Не требовать излишнего вниманья,
Обид, претензий к близким не копить
До старческого не дойти брюзжанья;
Совсем не просто стариками быть.

И не давить своим авторитетом,
И опытом не слишком донимать.
У молодых свои приоритеты
И это надо ясно понимать.

Пусть далеко не всё тебе по нраву,
Но не пытайся это изменить,
И ложному не поддавайся праву
Других уму и разуму учить.

Чтоб пеною не исходить при споре,
Не жаловаться и поменьше ныть,
Занудство пресекая априори;
Совсем не просто стариками быть.

И ни к чему подсчитывать морщины,
Пытаясь как-то время обмануть.
У жизни есть на всё свои причины,
И старость — это неизбежный путь.

А если одиночество случится,
Умей достойно это пережить.
Быть стариками трудно научиться,
Не все умеют стариками быть.

To be old men — isn’t a plain thing, as one minds.
Not everyone can be old, it is fact.
To outlive to the old ages — isn't the whole science,
harder is to keep dignity and tact,

And not to sink, not to succumb to illness,
And not to bother others with the sores,
Be able to stop chatting in talks, deal less -
With teaching and instruction on each cause.

Not to require spare and surplus attention,
Not to stock offences, claims to your folk,
Not to get to senile grumble on pension;
It's not easy to be old, so to talk.

And not to press by authoritative cares,
Not to bore with experience, strict mood.
The young men have lots priorities of theirs,
And this must be too clearly understood.

If though not everything is to your liking,
Don't try to change all, every mind and heart,
Don't give in to false right, as of a high king,
To teach others the wisdom, to be smart.

So for not to argue, foaming at the mouth,
Not to complain, less to whine and to cry,
To stop tediousness, starting from own house,
It is not easy to be old, that's why.

And there is no need to count all the wrinkles,
Trying to cheat time, leading it astray.
As life has its own reasons for all twinkles,
Old age — is an inevitable way...

But if utter loneliness happens around,
With dignity be able to survive.
It is hard to learn, how to be old and sound,
Not each one knows, how to be old alive.
