I Met My God Upon the Way

I met my God upon the way,
When faith was but a hollow sound,
And, heedless, I had turned away—
As men let idle myths confound.

No thunder rolled, no heavens stirred,
No blinding light, no mystic sign—
He simply waited, spoke no word,
With patience infinite, divine.

No sacred rite, no altar’s flame,
No trembling prayer escaped my tongue—
Yet all that was and all became
Still bore the mark of Him unsung.

He watched unseen as I walked blind,
Through scorn and doubt, through wit’s disdain,
At times I cursed, at times maligned,
And cast my lots in dark domain.

But then the hour—oh, cruel fate!—
When evil rose, unmasked, untamed,
A legion vast, a realm innate
Where none felt guilt, where none felt shame.

I struck at shadows, lashing, wild,
Yet fear but bred a thousand more—
The world became a face defiled,
A mask of hate behind each door.

Yet even then, in desert bare,
Where mirage mocks and hope is vain,
Some light was kindled in despair—
Some truth that only loss explains.

For in the blaze of ruin fell,
I met my God in sorrow’s tide—
Who broke the silence, rose to tell:
“Fear not, for I am at thy side.
