Upon This Sinful Earth I Stray

Upon this sinful earth I stray,
Like a hound in the night, in the dust of the day.
To strangers, I smile; to kindred, I bite,
For words are my weapons, my lips are the fight.

Once bound in chains, now scorched by fate,
I twisted creeds, I cursed the great.
A soul estranged, a foe at birth,
Where knaves are crowned and vice gives worth.

The earth and grass now shroud the slain,
The numbers lie, yet flows the vein.
I wandered far, I bled, I fought—
Yet warriors serve, and kings are naught.

The sleepless dream of mountains torn,
Of shackles snapped, of idols worn.
Yet fools arise with hollow pride,
And see not flames on the other side.

Upon this sinful earth creeps vice,
Where feast breeds lust, and gold feeds lies.
And here lies doom, in hearts so light—
To live in bliss, yet shun the night.
