Dmitriy Merezhkovskiy If the roses lose
‘Если розы тихо осыпаются’
If the roses lose their petals silently,
If the stars lose luster in the sky,
And the waves
Do crush against the mountains
And extinguishes dawning
Out of sight…
That is death,
But without struggle torturous,
That is death,
Which captivates the eye,
Promises us comfort
Truly ravishing,
Finest gift,
The nature might decide…
That is Her,
Almighty mistress glorious,
Who does teach
Us, humans, to depart;
And with smile,
Though meek,
yet still deliberate
To confront the end
With open heart.
