Bombs over Orel

A human being is basic.
You care about lofty ideals and world peace.
But then it’s your dad in the bomb shelter,
And your mom in the bathtub,
And missiles over your hometown.

And your focus narrows down
To a single point.

It’s my best friend’s 4-year-old
Crying as mom picks her up:
“Mommy, I was there in the basement.
Mommy, the sirens were so loud.
Mommy, I thought you died.”

You say we deserved it.
Are you sure we did?

It’s my dad in the bomb shelter,
And my mom in the bathtub,
And I just want it to stop.
I want it to stop.
Now.
