The Migration Period shook Europe and formed the basis of modern countries known to us today. In particular, it significantly affected the British Isles. Since the 5th century AD tribes — Saxons, Jutes, Angles, Frisians — arrived actively from the continent. On the islands, they were opposed by the native inhabitants, the Britons, who were not welcoming the conquerors. The confrontation, which went down in history as the Anglo-Saxon Invasion, began.

Over several centuries of wars, new kingdoms rose, becoming the fundamentals, over which modern England with its counties will one day emerge. The conquerors brought a new political system to the islands, along with a new religion — Christianity. Gaius Julius Caesar is said to have used the word when talking about the Gallic war. However, the Romans were full of contempt for the Germanic peoples, Tacitus calling their home a hideous blood-curdling place full of dark woods and swamplands. But who were the Germanic Tribes? And how did they leave their mark on Civilization?

Warum es in den USA einen deutschen Bundesstaat gibt

Die Deutschen haben die USA wie fast kein anderes Volk gepr;gt. W;hrend man heute aufgrund der Sprache vor allem an die Briten und Iren denkt, gab es eine Zeit, in der die Deutschen die gr;;te Auswanderergruppe in die Vereinigten Staaten ausmachten und damit einen ma;geblichen Einfluss auf die amerikanische Kultur hatten.

Bis heute geben ;ber 40 Millionen Amerikaner an, deutscher Abstammung zu sein. Damit machen die Deutschen mit Abstand die gr;;te Ethnie in den Vereinigten Staaten aus, also noch vor den Iren mit gut 30 Millionen und den Engl;ndern und Afroamerikanern mit jeweils knapp 25 Millionen.

Vieles ;nderte sich ;ber den Lauf der Geschichte, besonders die beiden Weltkriege und die Verschmelzung der Kulturen hatten gro;en Einfluss auf die deutsche Pr;senz. Doch auf einem konzentrierten Fleck, genauer gesagt ein Bundesstaat ist die urspr;ngliche deutsche Kultur bis heute besonders stark erhalten geblieben: Die Rede ist von Wisconsin im Mittleren Westen.

Dieser US-Staat ist bis heute ein lebendiges Zeugnis deutscher Einwanderung und Tradition und dort bezeichnet sich mehr als die H;lfte als ethnisch deutsch. Mit seinen zahlreichen Oktoberfesten, deutschen Brauereien und einer Vielzahl an deutschen Nachnamen und Festen stellt die groesste Stadt Wisconsin das Herzst;ck deutscher Kultur in den USA dar.

Hier finden sich Spuren der alten Heimat in fast jeder Ecke, von der Architektur ;ber die K;che bis hin zu den kulturellen Veranstaltungen. In den USA wird er deshalb h;ufig einfach als The German State bezeichnet.
Doch warum hat es genau dort so viele Deutsche hingezogen? Und die viel wichtigere Frage: Warum ist ausgerechnet dort die deutsche Kultur so stark erhalten geblieben? All diese spannenden Fragen schauen wir uns im heutigen Video an! Viel Spass!
