Среди поклонников послушных
Других причудниц я видал,
Самолюбиво равнодушных
Для вздохов страстных и похвал.

Они, суровым поведеньем
Пугая робкую любовь,
Ее привлечь умели вновь,

По крайней мере, сожаленьем,
По крайней мере, звук речей
Казался иногда нежней,
И с легковерным ослепленьем
Опять любовник молодой
Бежал за милой суетой.

Surrounded by obedient admirers,
Other whimsy ladies I have seen,
Selfishly indifferent they have been
To sighs of passion and of praises.

And what, I found with great surprise?
They, with stern and harsh demeanour,
Frightening timid love away,
Could still attract it back again,

At least with sorrow's glance around,
At least the speeches' sound
Seemed sometimes tender,
And with the gullible blinding glarre,
Once more the young lover would flee
In pursuit of the sweet bustle vanity.
