EUGENE ONEGIN THE NOVEL IN VERSE BY A.S. PUSHKIN VERSE INTERPRETATION BY LARISSA SENEGAL

Chapter III-IX

Now with what keen attention she reads,
A sweet and sugary romance indeed.
With what a lively, charming grace,
She drinks the captivating, false embrace!

With happy power of dreaming's might,
Animated creatures take their flight.
The lover of Julie de Wolmar bright,
Malek Adel and De Linar*, light,

And Werther, rebel, martyr of despair,
And Grandison, beyond compare,
Who lulls us into slumber, soft and fair,
All for the tender dreamer, rare,
In one sole image now are dressed,
In Onegin, all are blessed.

------
* Malek Adele and de Linard: both characters were popular among romantic young ladies of the nineteenth century. Their love, requiring treason to the fatherland, loss of reputation, honour, was perceived as a real feeling: the hero must sacrifice everything for the sake of his beloved. This maximalism made the images of Malek-Adel and of de Linard attractive in the eyes of female admirers.
