Своим пенатам возвращенный,
Владимир Ленский посетил
Соседа памятник смиренный,
И вздох он пеплу посвятил;

И долго сердцу грустно было.
'Poor Yorick*!'  - молвил он уныло, -
Он на руках меня держал.
Как часто в детстве я играл
Его Очаковской** медалью!

Он Ольгу прочил за меня,
Он говорил: дождусь ли дня?..'
И, полный искренней печалью
Владимир тут же начертал
Ему надгробный мадригал.

** Очаковская медаль - Медаль 'За храбрость при взятии Очакова 1788'.
Медаль учреждена 14 апреля 1789 г. рескриптом Императрицы Екатерины II, данным светлейшему князю Г.А. Потемкину-Таврическому. Медалью награждали нижних чинов и рядовых русской армии, принимавших участие в штурме и взятии крепости Очаков 6 декабря 1788 г.

Примечание переводчика: Очаковская медаль даровалась рядовым и унтер-офицерам. Поэтому или Ленский что-то путает, или Дмитрий Ларин не был бригадиром.

Chapter II-XXXVII

Returned to his own home at last,
Vladimir Lensky paid a visit,
To his neighbour's humble, silent cast,
And a sigh to the ashes he did transmit;

And long his heart was filled with woe.
'Poor Yorick*!' - he uttered, low and slow -
'He held me in his arms of yore.
How often in childhood did I play
With his Ochakov** medal, bright and gay!

He destined Olga to be mine,
He'd ask, 'Will I live to see that day and time?'
And, filled with sincere sorrow's thrall,
Vladimir then did a madrigal*** scrawl,
A mournful verse, a tomb-side call
Upon the Dmitriy Larin' tombstone.

** Ochakov Medal - the medal commemorating the capture of Ochakov fortress, 1788.
The medal was established on 14 April 1789 by a rescript of Empress Catherine II. Ochakov Medal was awarded to the lower ranks and privates of the Russian army who took part in the storming and capture of the fortress of Ochakov on 6 December 1788. This battle was one of the main battles of the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1791, in which the Russian army under the command of Field Marshal General Prince G.A. Potemkin-Tavrichesky took part. In this battle up to two thirds of the Turkish garrison were killed, 4.5 thousand prisoners, 180 banners and 310 guns were taken.

*** A madrigal is a short lyrical poem in a strict poetic form.
