Сначала все к нему езжали;
Но так как с заднего крыльца
Обыкновенно подавали
Ему донского жеребца,

Лишь только вдоль большой дороги
Заслышит их домашни дроги, -
Поступком оскорбясь таким,
Все дружбу прекратили с ним.

"Сосед наш неуч, сумасбродит,
Он фармазон; он пьет одно
Стаканом красное вино;
Он дамам к ручке не подходит;
Все да да нет; не скажет да-с
Иль нет-с". Таков был общий глас.

Chapter II-V

At first the neighbours flocked to see;
But from the back porch, he would show
His Don steed, ready for the road.
And mount him in his stirrup free;

As soon as they his chaise could hear
Come rattling down the highway near,
Offended at such slight to them,
They broke off their friendship with him.

'Our neighbour's rude and quite insane,
A Freemason, he drinks alone
Red wine by the glass, it's known.
He shuns the ladies' hands, so plain.
He never says 'yes, ma’am' or 'no, sir',
But always simply 'yes' or 'no'.'
