Он в том покое поселился,
Где деревенский старожил
Лет сорок с ключницей бранился,
В окно смотрел и мух давил.

Все было просто: пол дубовый,
Два шкафа, стол, диван пуховый,
Нигде ни пятнышка чернил.
Онегин шкафы отворил:

В одном нашел тетрадь расхода,
В другом наливок целый строй,
Кувшины с яблочной водой
И календарь осьмого года;
Старик, имея много дел,
В иные книги не глядел.

Chapter II-III

In yonder chamber he took rest,
Where forty years a village squire
With housekeeper had daily cursing test,
And watched the flies and snuffed the fire.

All simple was: oak floor, two chests,
A table, sofa stuffed with down,
No ink stains marred the walls, at least.
Onegin opened chests by own:

In one he found a ledger's page
Of household costs, in t'other row
Of liqueurs, jugs of cider sage,
And calendar of years ago.
The squire, busy otherwise,
Neglected books, a hapless guise.
