Валерий Брюсов To Young Poet

Pale young man with a burning gaze, so pleasant,
Three precepts I give you today, they are main:
This is the first one, don't live in the present,
As only the future — is the Poet's domain.

The second one is: don't sympathy others,
And do love yourself with a boundless feeling.
The third one is this: do worship Art rather,
Without thinking and aims, while you are living.

Pale young man now with a very confused glare,
If you accept three precepts with all your heart,
I'll fall as being overfought but aware
Of leaving to the world the poet and bard.
