Еще бокалов жажда просит
Залить горячий жир котлет,
Но звон брегета им доносит,
Что новый начался балет.

Театра злой законодатель,
Непостоянный обожатель
Очаровательных актрис,
Почетный гражданин кулис,

Онегин полетел к театру,
Где каждый, вольностью дыша,
Готов охлопать entrechat*,
Обшикать Федру, Клеопатру,
Моину** вызвать (для того,
Чтоб только слышали его).

* Entrechat (он же скрещенный) – прыжок в балетных танцах, при котором танцующий ударяет несколько раз ногою об ногу.
** Женские имена – это герои произведений, крайне модных в те года. Моина - героиня трагедии В.А. Озерова «Фингал».

A thirst for wine doth still remain,
To quench the sizzling cutlets' pain.
But time's embrace, the chime of a Breguet watch declare,
A new ballet's ethereal glare.

The theatre's lord, a fickle heart,
Adoring actresses, his art.
A denizen of backstage lore,
Onegin seeks the theatre's door.

Onegin sped unto the play,
Where all may freely have their say,
To applaud an entrechat*,
To catcall Ph(a)edra and Cleopatra**.
To summon Moinu** (to attract
Attention to himself by that).

* Entrechat - a ballet jump in which the dancer repeatedly crosses and uncrosses their legs.
** In those times, works featuring Fedra, Cleopatra, and Moina (a character from Russian literature) as their heroines were extremely popular.
