Eugene Onegin English transl
Monsieur l'Abb;,

Chapter I-III
In service true, his sire excelled,
Yet debts did weigh his noble name.
Three balls a year, his wealth beheld,
But soon his fortune turned to shame.
Eugene's fate, by chance, was blessed,
Madame first watched o'er him with care.
Monsieur then replaced her breast,
A child of wit, beyond compare.
Monsieur l'Abb;, a Frenchman poor,
To spare the child from weary days,
Taught him with jest, his learning sure,
No strictness dimmed his playful ways.
For naughtiness, a gentle scold,
And walks in Summer's garden fair,
So Eugene's childhood, stories told,
A blend of wit and carefree air.
