Берггольц - Анна Ахматова в 1941... Bergholz Verse
the front doors tightly closed, quite not far
from the carved gates, cast-iron and wide,
Citizen Anna Andreevna Akhmatova,
and Poet Anna Akhmatova
is standing on duty there at night.
A gas helmet hangs heavily on her left thigh,
and at her right hand, there's, as always, lightly clad,
in one blanket, raised above the glow of her eyes,
the darling guest - Muse with a light pipe in her hand.
Opposite, across the Fontanka, — there are entirely mute houses,
with white crossed windows. And behind, no sparks, no lights someone sees.
And a pearly-pure darkness flickers on the window glasses,
again on the near approaches were thrown back the enemies.
Oh, whom do you, the adversary, want to fight?
Anna Akhmatova, standing at the Fountain House with the Army for our land?
or her best guardian, the Leningrad white night?
or at least her wisest Muse with a deadly weapon - a light pipe in a light hand?
