Read the Riot Act*
To read the riot act is an idiom that means to give a firm oral reprimand to someone or a group. The expression comes from a real Riot Act that was a law in Britain to prevent disorder and had to be read aloud before it could be enforced. The idiom is used to warn someone that they need to change their behavior or face consequences. In the 18th century, the Riot Act was a genuine document read out loud to unruly and angry mobs. In 1715, the British government instituted the act, which gave them the authority to label any group of more than 12 people a threat to the peace.

Donald John Trump (born June 14, 1946) is an American politician, media personality, and businessman who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021. Trump is the only American president to have been impeached twice, in 2019–20 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress after he pressured Ukraine to investigate Biden, and in 2021 for incitement of insurrection. The Senate acquitted him in both cases. Trump refused to concede after losing the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden, falsely claiming widespread electoral fraud, and attempted to overturn the results. On January 6, 2021, he urged his supporters to march to the U.S. Capitol, which many of them violently attacked. Within 36 hours, five people died: one was shot by Capitol Police, another died of a drug overdose, and three died of natural causes, including a police officer. Many people were injured, including 174 police officers. Four officers who responded to the attack died by suicide within seven months. Damages caused by attackers exceeded $2.7 million.
