GOP Senator Calls Marjorie Taylor Greene A ‘Total Waste Of Time’, ‘Horrible Leader’

GOP Senator Thom Tillis has reportedly targeted House Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene in comments made during a recent interview with CNN. Tillis described Greene as a "total waste of time" and "horrible leader."

Marjorie Taylor Greene (nee Taylor; born May 27, 1974), also known by her initials MTG, is an American far-right politician, businesswoman, and conspiracy theorist who has been the U.S. representative for Georgia's 14th congressional district since 2021. A member of the Republican Party, she was elected to Congress in 2020 following the retirement of Republican incumbent Tom Graves and was reelected in 2022.

Greene has promoted antisemitic, white supremacist, and far-right conspiracy theories, including the white genocide conspiracy theory,[6][7] QAnon, and Pizzagate.[8][9] Other extremist conspiracy theories[10][11] she has promoted include government involvement in mass shootings in the United States, baseless allegations of murder against the Clinton family, and 9/11 conspiracy theories.[12][13] Before running for Congress, she supported calls to execute prominent Democratic Party politicians, including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.[14] As a congresswoman, she equated the Democratic Party with Nazis, and compared COVID-19 safety measures to the persecution of Jews during the Holocaust,[15][16][17] later apologizing for this comparison.[18] During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Greene promoted Russian propaganda and praised Vladimir Putin.[19] Greene identifies as a Christian nationalist.[20]

A strong supporter of former president Donald Trump, Greene aided and supported Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 U.S. presidential election and has since supported Trump's false claims of a stolen election.[21] She called for the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election in Georgia to be decertified,[22] and was part of a group of Republican legislators who unsuccessfully challenged votes for Joe Biden during the 2021 United States Electoral College vote count, even though federal agencies and courts overseeing the election found no evidence of electoral fraud.[23] Days after Biden's inauguration, Greene filed articles of impeachment alleging abuse of power.[24][25]

On February 4, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to remove her from all committee roles, in response to her statements and endorsements of political violence. Eleven Republicans joined the unanimous Democrats in the vote.[26][27] She was appointed to new committee roles in January 2023.[28][29] In June 2023, Greene was expelled from the conservative House Freedom Caucus after insulting Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, another member of the caucus.

Marjorie Taylor Greene has come under fire from a number of her Republican colleagues in Congress after she called for Speaker Mike Johnson to resign in response to the House passing a $95 billion foreign aid package.

In an interview with CNN, GOP Senator Thom Tillis called Greene "a total waste of time" and a "horrible leader." One political scientist told Newsweek however that Greene "represents today's brand of the Republican Party" better than many moderates.


On Tuesday, the Senate passed the foreign aid bill after it was approved by the House on Saturday in four separate votes, and it is expected to be signed into law by President Biden on Wednesday.

Greene alleged on X (formerly Twitter) that Johnson had "betrayed Republicans by handing the gavel to Joe Biden" and called for him to resign. She had already filed a motion to vacate though didn't push for it to be taken up immediately.
Newsweek contacted Representative Greene for comment at 8 a.m. ET on Wednesday. This article will be updated if she decides to comment.

Speaking to CNN reporter Lauren Fox on Tuesday, Senator Tillis hit out at Greene, commenting: "I think she is uninformed, she is a total waste of time, and I'm embarrassed to have actually lived geographically in her district at one time before she was there.

"She is a horrible leader. She is dragging our brand down. She, not the Democrats, are the biggest risk to us getting back to a majority," he said.

Addressing reporters outside Congress, Utah Senator Mitt Romney said: "There are some folks that try to get themselves as many tweets, as many followers, as they can. A lot of sound and fury signifying nothing."

His fellow Republican Senator Kevin Cramer said that if Johnson "is not good enough, no one's going to be good enough," according to The Daily Beast.

Greene was also attacked by The New York Post, once dubbed Donald Trump's "favorite newspaper," which posted a doctored photograph of her wearing a Soviet-style hat and the headline "Nyet, Moscow Marjorie" on its front page.

On Friday, in an interview with CNN before the aid bill passed in the House, former representative Ken Buck, a Republican from Colorado, hit out at Greene after being played a clip of a commentator on Russian state TV claiming she was "running Congress."

He replied: "Well, 'Moscow Marjorie' has reached a new low. She is just mouthing the Russian propaganda and really hurting American foreign policy in the process. She's acting completely irresponsibly. And, again, when history looks at this period of time, Russia invaded Ukraine, Ukraine is fighting for its freedom, and we should be with the freedom fighters in this war."

However, Thomas Gift, who heads the Centre on U.S. Politics at University College London, U.K., told Newsweek that Greene is closer to the Republican grassroots than many of her GOP critics in the Senate.

He said: "Marjorie Taylor Greene represents today's brand of the Republican Party more than moderates like Mitt Romney. Trump has remade the GOP in his image, but it's fringe politicians like MTG that carry water for him in Washington.

With her biggest booster abandoning her after she flipped out as Congress passed a massive $95 million foreign aid package despite her threats, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) appears to have overplayed her hand — and set in motion the end of her reign of terror in the House.


That is the opinion of the New York Times' Michelle Cottle in a column in which she claimed Greene just had the worst week of her political career, culminating in Donald Trump siding with House Speaker Michael Johnson on the bill and subsequently leaving her "flapping and flailing."

As the columnist wrote, Taylor Greene now stands humiliated after embarrassing herself to the point where "members of her own team feel compelled to abandon her."

As Cottle notes, Greene has done significant damage to the far-right wing in the House and will likely see her influence in the caucus quickly wane at a rapid pace.

"She has, in very little time, undermined the influence of her party’s entire right flank, driving less unhinged Republicans — most notably the House speaker, Mike Johnson — to brush back her and her ilk like the poo-flinging chaos monkeys they are," Cottle wrote, before opining, "I may be off base here, Marjo, but trashing your colleagues as no better than the other side in a high-stakes election year is not the best way to win them over to your kamikaze mission."


As it stands now, Cottle suggested that Greene's only allies left standing seem to be in the Kremlin.

"More food for thought, congresswoman: When Russian propagandists start praising your politics and beauty, it’s time to rethink your life choices," she wrote, adding, "I mean, not even Donald Trump is throwing in with 'Moscow Marjorie,' as she has been dubbed in some cheekier conservative corners."

Bestselling author Stephen King has continued to share other people's withering descriptions of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, days after his social media post in which the Georgia Republican was dubbed "Moscow Marjorie."

Greene has blasted members of her own party after the House passed a Ukraine aid bill on Saturday. As Ukraine continues to fight against the full-scale invasion that Russian President Vladimir Putin launched in February 2022, the U.S. has been a key ally to Kyiv. Saturday's bill will provide over $60 billion in foreign aid to help restock Ukraine's arsenal.

After months of U.S. lawmakers urging GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson to take up legislation that would help fund Ukraine, the Louisiana Republican was finally able to get it passed by a 311-112 vote, with a large number of Democrats helping Republicans push it across the finish line. The bill also provides military aid to Israel, replenishes U.S. weapons systems and gives humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.
Upon leaving the Capitol on Saturday, Greene told reporters: "This is the sellout of America today. When we had members of Congress in there waving the Ukrainian flag on the United States House of Representatives floor while we're doing nothing to secure our border, I think every American in this country should be furious."

On Wednesday, The New York Times published an op-ed headlined: "The Humbling of Marjorie Taylor Greene." In the piece, writer Michelle Cottle tackled Greene's calls for Johnson to resign over the foreign aid package.

Cottle wrote: "In our Trump-era politics, there's always the question of how crazy is too crazy—how disruptive and extreme an elected official can get before becoming so embarrassing that members of her own team feel compelled to abandon her?"

"Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene seems to have reached that outer limit. Again," Cottle went on. "It's not simply that Ms. Greene has taken such a Putin-pleasing approach to Russia's war in Ukraine (Ukrainian Nazis? Really?) that the term 'useful idiot' feels unavoidable.

"She has, in very little time, undermined the influence of her party's entire right flank, driving less unhinged Republicans—most notably the House speaker, Mike Johnson—to brush back her and her ilk like the poo-flinging chaos monkeys they are."

The cutting article was subsequently later referenced by King, who wrote in a post shared on X, formerly Twitter: "[Michelle] Cottle on MTG: "A poo-flinging chaos [monkey]."


Newsweek has contacted a representative of Greene via email for comment.

Days earlier, horror author King shared another comment made about Greene.

On Friday, former Republican Rep. Ken Buck, who has previously referred to Greene as "Moscow Marjorie," appeared on CNN. When host Erica Hill played the former representative a clip of a Russian television personality recently claiming that "Speaker Johnson is not the one who is running Congress; Marjorie Taylor Greene is running Congress. Everyone is afraid of her."

Buck then responded: "Well, 'Moscow Marjorie' has reached a new low. She is just mouthing the Russian propaganda and really hurting American foreign policy in the process. King then waded into the conversation over the weekend, writing in post on X: "Republican Ken Buck has dubbed MTG 'Moscow Marjorie.'"

There has been a history of King calling out Greene online. He previously criticized the politician on X after she appeared on Tucker Carlson's show Tucker on X in December to discuss the state of U.S. politics.

During her appearance, Greene criticized the White House claiming that "Washington doesn't care about normal Americans and normal American ideas and normal American values."

Greene shared a clip of the interview, captioning it: "If you don't fund the foreign wars, if you don't wear their flag, and if you don't have a sign outside your office door, you're going against Washington, against the Pentagon, and against the military industrial complex. And you will pay the price."

King slammed Greene's stance by retweeting her post and adding: "Putin loves fools like you."

He also criticized Greene on November 5 when she posted inaccurate information amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

"Israel is literally dominating in their war with Hamas after being brutally attacked killing thousands of innocent people, and not one single American dollar has been spent on that war yet. Just think about that," she wrote on X.

Plenty of people were quick to fire back at the outspoken representative, including King: "Are you tripping? We've given them aid and armaments for decades."
