Areport about Roger Stone, a longtime adviser of former President Donald Trump, allegedly discussing the assassination of members of Congress weeks before the 2020 election has sparked a furious backlash.
According to audio obtained by Mediaite, Stone spoke about assassinating two Democratic congressmen—Eric Swalwell from California and Jerry Nadler from New York—to Sal Greco, then a New York police officer moonlighting as a security guard for Stone. Mediaite does not specify how or from whom it obtained the audio.

A new video clip, exclusively obtained by Rolling Stone, shows Roger Stone engaging in a phone conversation with Enrique Tarrio on November 5, 2020, in his Fort Lauderdale office. This footage is part of Christoffer Guldbrandsen’s documentary “A Storm Foretold,” which explores how Stone’s “Stop the Steal” campaign contributed to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“Stone had been busy, launching ‘Stop the Steal’ and mobilizing Trump allies and had just gotten off the phone with General Flynn, when Enrique Tarrio, the national leader of the Proud Boys, called. Tarrio’s voice was inaudible, but Stone is heard telling him that he is still waiting for an update from the campaign – before he says he needs to talk without the camera rolling,” Guldbrandsen told Rolling Stone.

Guldbrandsen shares, “Tarrio was a fixture around Stone – helping him out, working with him on his social media, and even organizing a fundraiser for Stone just before his trial.” He added that Stone maintained contact with Tarrio until and even after the Jan. 6 attack through encrypted apps.
Longtime Allies

Guldbrandsen’s aim with “A Storm Foretold” is to show that the Proud Boys, a group central to the Capitol attack’s violence, were tightly linked to the Trump campaign through Stone, a longtime ”friend and ally” of Donald Trump.
Political Insights

"It's time to do it," Stone told Greco at a restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, according to Mediaite.
"Let's go find Swalwell. It's time to do it. Then we'll see how brave the rest of them are. It's time to do it. It's either Nadler or Swalwell has to die before the election. They need to get the message. Let's go find Swalwell and get this over with. I'm just not putting up with this s*** anymore."
Stone denied making the comments in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
"I never planned or threatened to have any politician assassinated," he wrote. "This is another fake news hoax without evidence."
In a statement to Mediaite, Stone denied making the comments about Swalwell and Nadler, calling it "total nonsense."

"I've never said anything of the kind more AI manipulation. You asked me to respond to audios that you don't let me hear and you don't identify a source for. Absurd," said Stone. Greco did not deny that the comments were made, according to Mediaite, and told the outlet: "I don't think your reader is interested in ancient political fodder."
Newsweek, which has not heard the audio and cannot confirm its source, has contacted Stone for further comment via social media. Greco has been contacted via his website. Swalwell and Nadler have also been contacted for comment via email.
The conversation reportedly took place after Nadler, who serves on the House Judiciary Committee alongside Swalwell, announced the committee would investigate Trump's commutation of Stone's prison sentence after he was convicted on charges linked to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. Trump commuted Stone's sentence in July 2020, just days before the latter was to begin serving a 40-month prison sentence for lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstructing the House investigation into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election.

The report sparked angry reactions on social media.
"There are people accused of non-violent crimes rotting in jail because they can't afford bail, but Roger Stone walks free ***AFTER TELLING A COP*** they should assassinate two congressmen," Melanie D'Arrigo, the executive director of Campaign for New York Health and a former Democratic congressional candidate, wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
"Don't pretend there's an equal system of justice," D'Arrigo added.
"These are the people Trump surrounds himself with," Fred Guttenberg, a gun control activist, wrote on X about Stone.
"If Roger Stone was planning an assassination of @ericswalwell & @JerryNadlerhe should be arrested. We better VOTE to be sure the guy who enables these thugs never steps foot in the White House again."
Author Patrick Tomlinson wrote: "Why is this fascist menace still walking free?"
Supporters of Stone defended him.
"The deranged leftists are making up lies about my good friends @RogerJStoneJr and @TheSalGreco again," wrote podcaster Alan Jacoby. "They can't get any sleep knowing Roger is advancing the MAGA movement and President Trump in major ways."
"Roger Stone is way too savvy & intelligent to say something like that... that conversation either didn't happen or it's altered or it's being taken way way out of context," one person wrote.

The Republican operative and close Donald Trump ally Roger Stone reportedly told an associate one of two prominent Democratic congressmen “ha[d] to die before the election” in 2020.
“It’s time to do it,” Stone said, according to Mediate, which cited a recording the outlet reported was made at a Florida restaurant.

“Let’s go find Swalwell. It’s time to do it. Then we’ll see how brave the rest of them are. It’s time to do it. It’s either Nadler or Swalwell has to die before the election. They need to get the message. Let’s go find Swalwell and get this over with. I’m just not putting up with this shit any more.”
Eric Swalwell, from California, and Jerry Nadler, from New York, are both members of the House judiciary committee.
Swalwell is a prominent anti-Trump voice and a magnet for Republican attacks. As judiciary chair, Nadler oversaw Trump’s first impeachment, for seeking political dirt in Ukraine.
In 2020, Nadler said the committee would investigate Trump’s commutation of Stone’s sentence on seven counts related to attempts to obstruct the investigation of Russian election interference in 2016. Stone was sentenced to 40 months but never went to prison.
Mediate said Stone’s remarks were made to an associate, Sal Greco, who was then a serving New York police officer but was eventually fired. He has claimed his dismissal resulted from his links to Stone.
Stone, now 71, is a veteran political operative and self-confessed dirty trickster who has Richard Nixon’s face tattooed on his back. In 2020, he was closely involved in Trump’s attempt to overturn his defeat by Joe Biden.
Mediate cited an anonymous source “familiar with the discussion” as saying they believed Stone was serious.
“It was definitely concerning that he was constantly planning violence with an NYPD officer and other militia groups,” the source said.
Stone’s associations with far-right groups such as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, culminating in the attack on Congress on 6 January 2021, have been investigated widely.
The anonymous source told Mediate: “Stone had been at war with Nadler and Swalwell for years. He just hates them. He just wanted to get Trump back into office so these things would stop.”
Mediate previously reported taped remarks in which, it said, Stone told Greco that Aaron Zelinsky, a prosecutor on the Russia investigation, needed to be “punished”.
“He needs to be punished,” Stone was quoted as saying. “You have to abduct him and punish him. That has to be done. It will be easy to abduct him because he is a weakling.”
Stone claimed those comments were fakes, generated by artificial intelligence. Asked about the comments about Nadler and Swalwell, Mediate said, Stone called them “total nonsense” and “more AI manipulation”.
He added: “I’ve never said anything of the kind … you asked me to respond to audios that you don’t let me hear and you don’t identify a source for. Absurd.”
On social media, Stone said: “Trump-hating Mediate says the have a four-year-old taped conversation in which they allege I threaten to kill two politicians – why don’t they post or produce the tape? Never happened.”
Greco, Mediate said, said in a text message: “I don’t think your reader is interested in ancient political fodder.”
Aides to Nadler and Swalwell did not immediately respond to Guardian requests for comment.

Revealed: Roger Stone's Secret Call With Proud Boys Leader in Lead-Up to Jan. 6
© Provided by Rolling Stone
Back in September, the former chairman of the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison on "seditious conspiracy" charges related to the Jan. 6 raid of the U.S. Capitol.
According to the Justice Department, the far-right group "played a central role in setting the January 6th attack on our Capitol into motion," and as its leader, Tarrio created a special group within the militant organization called the Ministry of Self Defense that "established a chain of command, chose a time and place for their attack, and intentionally recruited others who would follow their top-down leadership and who were prepared to engage in physical violence if necessary." As his Proud Boys were storming the Capitol and assaulting police officers, Tarrio urged them on in encrypted group chats and on social media, later writing, "Make no mistake… we did this."
The key link between the Proud Boys and the Trump campaign appears to be none other than Roger Stone, a longtime Republican operative dating back to the days of Nixon who Ted Cruz once called "Trump's henchman and dirty trickster." Stone, one of the architects of Trump's "Stop the Steal" campaign following his 2020 election loss, reportedly hired the Proud Boys as his security at a 2018 GOP conference in Oregon, and Tarrio has been captured on several occasions wearing a T-shirt that read, "Roger Stone is innocent." The House Select Committee on the January 6 attack revealed that Stone regularly communicated with Proud Boys members, including Tarrio, in the months leading up to the insurrection in an encrypted group chat called "Friends of Stone."
And now, in a video clip provided exclusively to Rolling Stone, Stone can be seen talking with Tarrio by phone on Nov. 5, 2020, at Stone's office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The clip is taken from Christoffer Guldbrandsen's documentary A Storm Foretold, that chronicles how Stone's "Stop the Steal" campaign led to the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol. The film will be released in select theaters on Jan. 5.
"Stone had been busy, launching ‘Stop the Steal' and mobilizing Trump allies and had just gotten off the phone with General Flynn, when Enrique Tarrio, the national leader of the Proud Boys called. Tarrio's voice was inaudible, but Stone is heard telling him that he is still waiting for an update from the campaign - before he says he needs to talk without the camera rolling," Guldbrandsen tells Rolling Stone.
Guldbrandsen and his Danish camera crew shadowed Stone for years, gradually learning of his close ties with the Proud Boys, especially Tarrio.
"Tarrio was a fixture around Stone - helping him out, working with him on his social media, and even organizing a fundraiser for Stone just before his trial," explains Guldbrandsen. "Stone was in close contact with Tarrio right up until the attack on January 6 and after" via "encrypted apps."
What Guldbrandsen wants viewers of A Storm Foretold to know is that the film "demonstrates that the most violent group at the forefront of the attack on the U.S. Capitol was closely connected to the Trump campaign through Roger Stone, Donald Trump's friend and ally for more than 30 years."

Trump ally Roger Stone was filmed taking a phone call from Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio in the leadup to the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol.
As Rolling Stone reports, the call was captured by filmmaker Christoffer Guldbrandsen, who made a documentary on Stone called "A Storm Foretold" that is due to be released in select theaters Friday.
The call came as Stone was organizing the "Stop the Steal" movement intended to keep Trump illegally in power after losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
At the beginning of the call, Stone remarks to Tarrio that "I heard you got stabbed," apparently in reference to a fight he'd gotten into with Antifa activists.

He then walked out to his car and asked the camera crew for some privacy while he talked with Tarrio, who would go on to be convicted of seditious conspiracy for his central role in inciting the Capitol riots.
"Stone had been busy, launching ‘Stop the Steal’ and mobilizing Trump allies and had just gotten off the phone with General Flynn, when Enrique Tarrio, the national leader of the Proud Boys called. Long-time Donald Trump confidante and adviser Roger Stone has been captured in a new documentary chatting with the former head of the Proud Boys the day before the 2020 presidential election.
After he greets Enrique Tarrio, the one-time boss of the right-wing militant group, Stone waves away and walks from a camera and tech people filming scenes for "A Storm Foretold," a documentary about the events leading up to the Capitol insurrection that's premiering Friday.
Tarrio was sentenced last year to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6 raid on the U.S. Capitol. Stone, a self-described political "dirty trickster," was a key architect of the push to overturn the 2020 presidential election results that triggered insurrectionists.
Stone for some reason granted Danish documentary director Christoffer Guldbrandsen access to his activities before the 2020 presidential election — but not close enough for the Tarrio conversation.
“Stone had been busy, launching ‘Stop the Steal’ and mobilizing Trump allies and had just gotten off the phone with General Flynn, when Enrique Tarrio, the national leader of the Proud Boys, called," Guldbrandsen told the Rolling Stone, which was given a copy of the clip.
"Tarrio’s voice was inaudible, but Stone is heard telling him that he is still waiting for an update from the campaign — before he says he needs to talk without the camera rolling,” said Guldbrandsen.
"I heard you got stabbed," Stone can be heard in the clip telling Tarrio, who was slashed in a brawl near a bar in Washington D.C. two days before the presidential election.
"Congratulations," Stone added.
