Примечания:

1. Негоже лилиям прясть: «Негоже лилиям прясть» – название исторического романа Мориса Дрюона (Fr.) “La Loi des Males” (1957) (рус. досл. «Закон мужчин») в переводе Н. Ключанской и Л. Ефимова. Название – метафора, смысл которой: французскую корону (лилия – эмблема королевской власти во Франции с конца средних веков) могут наследовать только мужчины. Здесь: Аристократкам не дано быть хорошими кухарками.

2. Обед аристократки: Аллюзия на картину Павла Федотова «Завтрак аристократа» (Российская Империя, 1849–1850, Третьяковская картинная галерея).

3. лазанья: Лазанья – традиционное итальянское блюдо из нескольких тонких пластов теста, переложенных начинкой из мясного фарша с добавлением различных овощей и тёртого сыра; подаётся с соусом бешамель.

Notes:

1. It doesn’t befit the lilies to spin: “It does not Befit the Lilies to Spin” is the title of a historical novel by Maurice Druon (Fr.) “La Loi des Males” (1957) (Eng. verbatim “The Law of Males”) translated into Russian by N. Klyuchanskaya and L. Efimov. The name is a metaphor the meaning of which is: the French crown (the lily is the emblem of royal power in France since the end of the Middle Ages) can only be inherited by males. Here: There’s no way for a fine lady to be a good cook.

2. Dinner of a Fine Lady: An allusion to Pavel Fedotov’s painting “Breakfast of an Aristocrat” (the Russian Empire, 1849–1850, Tretyakov Art Gallery).

3. lasagna: Lasagna is a traditional Italian dish of several thin layers of dough, filled with minced meat and various vegetables, and grated cheese; it is served with some bechamel sauce.
