George Conway on Tuesday joined C-SPAN’s Washington Journal and took questions from callers – including one from a Trump supporter in Flordia who grilled Conway on his political conversion.

“I’m sorry that you were so dissuade and so fooled by Trump. I mean, you were married to Kellyanne Conway for 20 years prior to George or prior to Trump even being a blip on a screen. And somehow you were so dismayed that you were just so confused by it,” the caller began, adding:

You call him a liar. You rely on the January 6th circus, the January 6th parade, which if you looked at the tapes of it, which obviously you have you seen police escorting people, shaking hands, fist pumping. You don’t you don’t deal with any of that. You just do the left-leaning political lies. And why did you put yourself out forward? Is it just to get attention? Is that why Kellyanne is divorcing you?

“No, I’m not I’m not going to get into personal stuff, but I would rather be somewhere else than here today,” Conway replied, refusing to discuss his divorce from Trump’s former campaign manager and White House counselor.

“I avoided publicity my whole life, even when I was doing things that were political. I mean, I helped get Bill Clinton impeached. It was a kind of a thing that I, that the left attacked me for,” Conway continued, adding:
I don’t like corrupt politicians. I don’t like liars. That’s what this is about. And yes, I, I was confused by Donald Trump. I am ashamed that I supported him in 2016. It was a mistake of judgment. It was just make a moral judgment. It was an intellectual mistake. And I, I want to make amends for that. And I want to urge people. I mean, maybe not you, caller Chris, there are people who know better in the Republican Party.

Basically, they know that he’s a danger. They’re just too afraid to speak out or they’re too afraid to admit error. And that’s what I think a lot of what we see in Trumpism today is about, is that people are afraid. You know, they supported him because he gave the finger, if you will, to people they didn’t like. And then they thought they pretended they convinced themselves that he was smart, which he isn’t. They convinced themselves that he was competent, which he isn’t. They convinced themselves that he is moral, which he isn’t. And once you realize what happens is that he disproves all of those things so frequently that if you don’t want to a mistake, you turn it off. Okay. This caller says, oh, January 6th was a tourist visit, in essence.

Okay. I have met Capitol police officers who have been who were assaulted. One of them basically had to go and, you know, basically had to leave service because of the injuries that he suffered. People died that day. The property was destroyed. And if Donald Trump had had his wish. He tried, you know, he according to the testimony of the January 6th committee, according to Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony and according to other reporting, you know, he basically tried to assault a Secret Service agent to go up to Capitol. If he had gone to Capitol Hill, who knows what kind of violence would have ensued?

“And the only good thing that would have been, I mean, well it would have been bad because so many people, more people would have been hurt, but at least there would be no ambiguity. Nobody would be able to pretend, or maybe this caller would be able to pretend, that Trump didn’t inciting insurrection,” Conway concluded.
