vicarious
Definition: experienced in the imagination through the feelings or actions of another person
Origin: from Latin vicarius, meaning 'substitute' or 'deputy'
Example: She lived vicariously through her daughter's successes and accomplishments.
Living through another's actions is the essence of what it means to be vicarious. It is experiencing something secondhand, through the eyes, emotions, or actions of another person. This could be anything from living vicariously through a friend's travels, to experiencing the thrill of victory through a favorite sports team. It can be a way to broaden our horizons and experience things we may not have the opportunity to do ourselves. However, it can also prevent us from fully living our own lives, as we become too focused on the experiences of others instead of creating our own.
