To hold someones feet to the fire
To hold someone's feet to the fire is an idiom that means to pressure someone to do something, to hold someone accountable, or to force someone to comply. The expression is derived from an ancient test of courage or form of torture in which a person's feet were exposed to fire. It began to be used figuratively in the second half of the 1900s.
