Green Bank
в Аллеганских горах
(в штате Западная Вирджиния)

в Италии.

Что они уловили:
в любом случае это то, что
заметно отличается по своей интенсивности
от общего фонового шума Вселенной.

Так вот, всё то, что отличалось в момент получения,
собрали и опубликовали.
Вот, к примеру,
одна из страниц со ссылками для скачивания.
Но дело в том, что эти файлы даже открыть не так-то просто.
К ним приложили специальное руководство, и в нём сказано, что
для работы с этими данными
надо как минимум
сначала научиться пользоваться

Межпланетной файловой системой IPFS
(InterPlanetary File System).

И на самом деле даже само это руководство воспринимается,
пожалуй, посложнее, чем любая статья в Nature.
Желающим предлагается во всём этом разобраться, открыть, попытаться расшифровать и поделиться результатом.

Проект называется
A Sign in Space ("Знак в космосе"),

это идея одной из ярких персон в знаменитом

Институте
SETI
(Институте поиска внеземного разума)
 — Даниэлы де Паулис.

Она задалась очень интересным вопросом:
 сможем ли мы правильно понять смысл сообщения от братьев по разуму?
Поэтому решила устроить такой эксперимент:
предоставить человечеству «сырые» данные телескопов
и посмотреть, как их расшифруют.

То есть полученные сигналы
были на самом деле
отправлены со спутника
Trace Gas Orbiter,
который вращается по орбите вокруг Марса.

Но это, в общем-то, не меняет сути вопроса.

Кто знает, а может быть, у кого-то получится,
что сообщение содержит угрозы,
у кого-то — предупреждение,
у кого-то — мольбу о помощи.
Конечно, в случае такого эпохального события
в реальности расшифровывать сигнал первым делом будут учёные,
то есть опытнейшие специалисты,
и тем не менее, с точки зрения автора проекта,
к этому нужно подключать всё человечество.
И лучше к этому хотя бы попытаться как-то подготовиться.
Не стоит исключать, что
ребёнок из какого-нибудь захолустья
угадает в этом сообщении то,
чего не поймут даже самые светлые головы
нашей с вами современности.

A Sign in Space - The Message
Daniela de Paulis

A Sign in Space is an interdisciplinary project by media artist Daniela de Paulis, in collaboration with the SETI Institute, the European Space Agency, the Green Bank Observatory and INAF, the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics.

The project consists in transmitting a simulated extraterrestrial message as part of a live performance, using an ESA spacecraft as celestial source. The objective of the project is to involve the world-wide Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence community, professionals from different fields and the broader public, in the reception, decoding and interpretation of the message. This process will require global cooperation, bridging a conversation around the topics of SETI, space research and society, across multiple cultures and fields of expertise.

A Sign in Space is a multidisciplinary art project conceived by artist Daniela De Paulis. De Paulis is leading a global team to send an encoded message from the European Space Agency (ESA) ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) back to Earth, simulating a signal an advanced extraterrestrial civilization could eventually send to Earth.
The message will be “detected” by four radio astronomy observatories on Earth:
the SETI Institute’s Allen Telescope Array (ATA),
The Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT),
the National Science Foundation’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA)
and the Medicina Radio Astronomical Station observatory
managed by INAF (the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics).

De Paulis and her team developed the encoded message,
but its contents remain unknown, even to most of the collaborating partners.

The message will be transmitted from the TGO on May 24 at 19:16 UTC/12:15 pm PDT.
 
Following the transmission, the A Sign in Space team will host a series of Zoom-based discussions open to the public around topics that consider the societal implications of detecting a signal from an extraterrestrial civilization. The discussions will take place over 6-8 weeks after the transmission.

These events will be recorded and shared wholly or in part on social media and other public platforms. Participants agree to have their videos and voice recorded and shared.

This hour-long workshop will focus on non-Western perspectives that understand the celestial as neither alien nor outer. In reflecting on the A Sign in Space project, we will engage in activities that explore how intelligent extraterrestrials might imagine language and spacial mapping in radically different ways. The workshop will be grounded within anthropologically-informed aspects of Polynesian wayfinding, nomadic spacial orientation, and how language itself structures what can be communicated. Throughout, these discussions will be related to examples from science fiction stories that bring speculative possibilities of SETI to life.
