The Waltz of May

Oh, Spring Forty-five, you were welcomed –
So welcome by Danube’s blue waves
And peoples of Europe who waited
For freedom and spring and for May…
His wounded accordion singing
A waltz for the people he freed –
A young Russian soldier was playing and bringing
To people of Vienna their dreams…

Well remember Alps and Danube joyful days,
Vienna singing with the blooming sunny May;
Stays forever whirling, rushing in our hearts
That victorious, that Russian-Viennese Waltz…

The soldier’s brave notes were racing
With vibrant and colorful hues,
And Vienna was singing and dancing
Like Strauss was playing anew;
He pressed his accordion near,
A smile was gracing his face,
As if it was Volga’s spring flood he was seeing,
As if he had Russia embraced.

Refrain

A waltz full of hope and fire
Was gliding above Vienna’s streets,
A waltz full of passion, of spring and desires,
A waltz full of life and of dreams;
It’s spring Forty Five in the air,
Oh, Danube, you’ve waited too long,
A young Russian soldier on free Vienna’s square
Was playing a Viennese song…

Refrain
