The Wye

The Dyes went down river Wye
In a big and blue canoe
Mum at the helm, Son took the middle
Then Dad with our Dog at the back!

Mum could not see what’s going on
behind her, so she panics!
“Wide knees!” She’d scream at any rocking that came when dog was wagging!

So off they went down river Wye
Mum at the helm, her Boys behind
Down gentle river from Ross on Wye
To Symonds Yat with dog that whined the whole eventful journey!

They rowed the boat
Dog rocked the boat
“Wide Knees!” would Mother scream!
“Turn right, or left, keep off the rocks!”
would come instructions from the helm!

The dog would jump into the river
Enjoying cool of water
And Dyes would row, with knees relaxed
While Wilfred swam the Wye!

“Is that your dog?!” Some people asked
Surprised to see the dog passing
paddling madly by, trying to catch the boat!
“Yes!”, Dyes would say, “it is indeed, our
Wilfred, wilful dog, who loves to swim
and whines an awful lot!”

So on they went, through all rapids, manoeuvring with glee! “Wide knees!”
Would echo from the cliffs as they would
Pass the cheering crowds at speed!
“Keep off the rocks!” The Mother’s shouts would keep awake her Team!

All feeding places they would miss,
Trying to find their way!
On river Wye there’s not much food, remember for next time!
Bring all provisions with you,
O boatman or boatwoman!
As food is scarce, unless you are a fisherman or a seagull,
As Salmon and some other fish quite plentiful in river!

The Dyes arrived all safely, mind!
And did not waste from hunger!
They found famous hearty lunch
At Ye Olde Inn the pub of known regard
Enjoying food and laughter!
