Muse - You-re Not Listening - 2022

Muse: "You're not listening!"
Me: "You're not loud enough!"

Muse: "I'm practically in your ear!"
Me: "Only gales and storms do I hear..."

Muse: "You're too concerned with form!"
Me: "But yes---rhyming and meter are my norm!"

Muse: "Don't be so rigid; have flow; think of Ogden Nash!"
Me: "There's not much originality in that!.. You're tough and harsh!"

Muse: "You always have some excuse not to give heed to your Muse!"
Me: "You always come at some ungodly hour!"
Muse: "You're not the only poet I scour!"
Me: "More like, as far as I am concerned---devour!"

Muse: "Oh, stop complaining and finding fault, and just take out that pen and scribble!"
Me: "These lines are coming out bland and feeble..."

Muse: "Shut up and focus! I'm so tired of your insecurities!"
Me: "Insults won't help us!.. Oh, look---that's coming out without any impurities..."
Muse: "Oh, finally---a kind word; I can't believe my luck!"
Me: "Hey, don't push that! I've just gotten unstuck..."

Muse: "Alright, done here for today. Be thankful for that shove!"
Me: "Leaving so soon?! Well---figures. I never get too much of your love..."
Muse: "You don't need me to always be hovering above!"

Me: "Say w-h-a-a-a-t?!.."

Muse: "You're quite capable of writing decently without me. You've just gotta stop spreading yourself too thin!"
Me: "Whatever that means. Go on---make yourself scarce with that nasty sarcastic grin!"
Muse: "Pfff!.."

And just like that, as usual, into the ether she evaporated.

And I was left with an unfinished pile of letters and half-sentences---some flattened, some scattered---

To fish them out and create a semblance of order from that abyss...

What was it she said, pray, about adamancy, symmetry, and being remiss?..
