The Gaffer and the Lad

The droughty desert dreams to pass for Eden:
And in the Gaffer’s heart (that’s burning still)
A hungry fire is diligently hidden,
The quenchless flame of youthful love and will.

Well-fed and glad, here comes the pompous Lad.
His body’s blooming, while his heart is dead.
His presence doesn’t let frail hope breathe.

"Repay your debt, old man, from now on.
The sunset’s flame redeems a chilly dawn.
For what was done, can never be undone.
Blaze with the passion of the dying swan."

While nature looks unfeigned, it likes to fox,
To puzzle her offspring with a paradox.
