Shallow Promises

Wasting years in downtown bars.
Golden drinks to fade away.
Weight of failure on your broken shoulders.
Shallow promises to start again.

“It’s gonna be alright” you say to yourself.
“Pour another one” and let it all go to hell.
Remorse became the shape of your face.
Swallowing flames became a key to heaven’s gate.

This hollow feeling eaten you up.
Scaring the daylight out of your own self.
The bleeding holes of words unsaid,
You patch up with “I’m sorry” and “I’m fine”.

Running on empty, you never known warmth.
Past mistakes following you like a storm.
Rooted deep to your juvenile years.
But apples didn’t fall from your tree.

Empty bottles scattered on the floor.
Their faces you can’t stand anymore.
Tormenting you by being grim.
You just want sweet numbing relief.

Tossing out blame,
Dragging everyone through mud.
You pace like a ghost at night,
Then go on pretending you’re fine.

Day and night you off your face,
Living under someone’s shade.
Crying crocodile tears,
You keep repeating the same calamities.

Over and over again
You find yourself alone
Biting your tongue to hold on.
Was the drink worth losing hope?
