there was time i was poor

there was time, i was poor
happy for another coin
had enough dimes just for food
every cent exactly on
there was time, i was happy
for no reason, just for fun
had worn down so many chairs
at train stations of many towns

night knocks like apple on window's glass
and a bird's cry is getting lost all around
i know, i know i know just
that i was young at heart, and an old man now

there was time, i was busy
nothing else mattered to me
right by me the years have whistled
head's now sober as can be
garden whispers, i'll go to garden
to the trees until the time
feel the sweetness with my cheek,
feel the coolness of raw bark
