JACK WAS ONLY TEN

(the Irish story)

Em     C         G D
Jack’s going home
Em    C          G D
in his homeland,
Em    C          G D
sings a jolly song.
Am               D
Jack’s only ten;
singing of a song
to the graded streets,
rounding the pond.
Am                D
Jack’s jollied sweet,
Am              C   ?     G
Jack is jollied so sweet.

Drawings on the walls
look inside potholes
like a sleepy cow;
the sun in clouds rolls;
dismal, dim sunset,
a shadow of Big Ben
over pavements treads.
Jack’s only ten.

Chorus: C Am ? G C Am D

Suddenly, a bullet
like a buzzing bee
from the fence is fired
as fatality,
hitting Jacky’s heart,
taking life away –
is it human’s craft,
or the Devil’s play?

Jack won’t come home
in his homeland;
won’t be singing song.
Jack is now dead.
Never will he travel
crossing down the streets,
and no one will ever
say him-he’s so sweet!

Chorus.
