Jorge Carrera Andrade - Insular
To enjoy the taste of muscatos,
To Moluccas, where fruits are mellow
With a fragrance of clovel spices.
I would rather land on the seashores
Near Capo Verde Islands
To caress cockatoo’s feathers,
Wash my face with the pure silence.
I would rather sleep on the beaches,
Stroll the sandy land for hours,
And inhale iodine odours
From the briny sea flowers.
On Fernando-Po I would settle,
Or somewhere on Galapagos,
Where in sweet guava shadows
I would idle in scorched summers.
I would spend the nights on Jamaica
Or perhaps somewhere on Hawaii
Drowning and again buoyant
Over guitars' gentle whinin'.
I would end my days on an atoll
Most forsaken and most virgin
Reining over the wild crowds
Of the seashells and blue urchins.
And upon selling soul to sunshine,
Learning all the birds’ wording,
I would dwell on the pathless island
Half a goblin, half a warden.
