No Autumn s intercepting Chill by Emily Dickinson
объятий этих зной -
лишь африканской живизной
и стран восточных сном.
[David Preest:
This poem is part of the next surviving letter (L738)
of Emily to Mrs Holland. At the end of the letter
Emily recounts how Dr Holland had said goodbye
‘that November morning.’ She says, ‘He put one Hand on
Vinnie’s Head and the other on mine, and his Heart
on your’s, as we both knew, and said that the Sunshine
and the Scene he should always remember.’
Then the poem affirms that the chill of death cannot
quench the warm love of Dr Holland’s heart. In heaven
he knows the exuberant joy of an Africa and the peaceful
rest of an Asia.]

No Autumn's intercepting Chill by Emily Dickinson
No Autumn's intercepting Chill
Appalls this Tropic Breast --
But African Exuberance
And Asiatic rest.
