Triumph

When Pete went silent and quietened down, a group of friends nervously started exchanging glances, evidently without any of the previous feeling of comfort and peace. With all of this they didn’t have the slightest desire to say anything back and somehow to break the silence that was hanging over them. They were shifting from one foot to another intending to find what to do. The group wanted in that way to break the ice, but nothing specific came to mind. Pete took it as his personal triumph and in an attempt to continue his triumphant speech he coughed to get attention. But when he turned round and was ready to talk, he realized, looking at the backs of his friends who were leaving him alone, that his speech wouldn’t be heard at all.
