The gondola

In a fisher’s boat, or in a gondola’s pod,
moving towards the waves to wrestle
as by motor-launches considered odd,
and inconceivable, these types of vessels.

The gondola, a small isle, or rather coffin,
clamped in a canal, as put it Byron,
perceived by the idle men too often
to be the tripping means to fly on.

Please, take me to the Rialto’s bridge,
the well-known bridge in splendid Venice,
that many years it’s been under siege
of people attracted as by Phoenix.

Let me step on its worn-crazing stones,
and pass, in hardly breathing, its stairs;
this climbing up will make me strong,
or weak in jumping stroll, - who cares?

The gondola swims through fallen stars,
(как ни пытаюсь вставить сюда строчку, не выходит!)
I hardly hear his squeacking buzz,
except the splashing melody of oars.
