Ernest Miller Hemingway
at this time
I no longer have to work
the nightclubs and the universities
the bookstores
for tiny checks.
I no longer have to tell the freshman English class
at the U. of Nebraska (Omaha)
while sitting with my hangover at 11 a.m.
at a brown elevated desk
why I did it
how I did it
and what they might do in order to do
it too.
but I didn't mind the plane flights back home
with the businessmen
all of us drinking doubles
and trying not to look out past the wing
trying to relax
each happy that we were not on skid row
knowing we each had a certain talent
(so far)
which had saved us from that
(so far).
I may have to do it again some day but
right now I am where I belong:
flying over my own Mississippi River
passing over my own Grand Canyon
on schedule
no seat belt
no stewardess and
no lost luggage.
