The runaway
But only now I know:
The universal ancient rhyme
Forever is the snow.
In ice was glittering the pool;
An animal at bay,
I stalked, I walked, I missed the school;
I was the runaway.
Above I saw the frosty sun,
My single, my ardent wing;
And I was glad alone to run,
Among the birches to sing;
It was my happiness and pride
To flee, to go astray;
So emigrated I inside,
The lonely runaway.
I was alone, but I was free
In the perpetual clinch;
My countrymen were then the tree,
The squirrel and the finch,
I hate the bullets and the swords,
That kill without delay;
I flee from parties and from words,
Eternal runaway.
And if I see the world beneath,
I shall as always pray;
I laugh, and so I greet the death,
Immortal runaway.

My single(, my) ardent wing;
And I was glad alone to run, - I was alone and glad to run
Among the birches (to) sing;
My countrymen were then the tree,
The squirrel and (the)(little - better rhythm) finch,
And if I('ll) see the world beneath,
I shall as always - pray;
