A writer if he is a wave
And Russia is a brimy ocean,
He simply cannot stay away
When all the water is in motion.
A writer if he is a nerve
Of a great nation
He simply cannot be unhurt
Whenever liberty is striken.
The flood of time as it is speeding
Takes all our deeds away from here,
And in the abyss of oblivion
Folks, states and kings do disappear.
And if through sounds of lyre or trumpet
Some thing on earth has still remained,-
It would be taken by the time's gulf
And won't escape the mutual fate!

" Кто вел его на Геликон..."
Who's led him to the Helycone,
Who ever watched his steps and deeds? –
Not the poetic schools' Sodome,
But nature, enemies and needs.
translated 1995
О these tears in my eyes !
This cry of wrath and love!
О Czechia, all in tears!
О Spain, that's all in blood!
О mountain black and murk
That darkened all the world!
It's time - it's time to turn
My ticket back to Lord.
I do refuse to be
In Bedlam, anywhere,
I do refuse to see
The roving wolves of squares.
I do refuse to wail
Among the sharks of land.
I do refuse to sail
Down by the backs that're bent.
No need these ear-holes
Or keen prophetic eye.
For big and insane world
The answer's: - I deny!
1939 translated 1995
1940
" Рябину / Рубили / Зорькою ... "
The rowan
Was chopped
At dawn.
The rowan's
The fate
Of mourn.
The rowan,
The slopes
Of grey.
The rowan's
The Russian
Fate!
translated 1995
