Analysis
The poem "Fame is a Bee" is symbolic of the highs and lows of fame. It is an extended metaphor, comparing the characteristics of a bee to characteristics of fame. Dickinson's purpose in writing this poem was to express how fame might sound like a wonderful life to lead, but it also has it's disadvantages and will eventually fade away. Because Dickinson wasn't famously recognized in her lifetime, this poem was most likey just an observation of those she came into contact with. The few visitors she had became a huge impact on her writing. Because her father was so invested in state and national politics, she may have come accross famous political leaders, thus inspiring this poem.

Notice that the "wing" in line 4 in singular. Dickinson only gave the "bee" only one wing to represent the short flight of fame. One only soars high into fame for a short while before something better comes along and sends them into a downward spiral into irrelevance, similar to the flight path of a bee as if it only had one wing.

Analysis
In this poem, Dickinson is stating that fame is sweet to have in its own way, but it also has negative aspects. She mentions a single "wing". This could mean several different things. It could mean that with only one wing, "fame" is only able to fly some before falling or spiraling down and disappearing.

Ah, too, it has a wing’ is often misinterpreted, students failing to capture the tone of the line and interpreting the movement as an exuberant flight into ecstasy. Once they have discussed the emotive value of ‘Ah, too’ and have examined the effect of the rhythm in relation to the meaning, they will find it easier to identify the elements of wistfulness and regret in the tone.
