Montaigne was born in fifteen thirty three;
Yet when I read his so back-dated writings,
They are as new and fresh in their decree
As if he were my pal in nineteen nineties.
He help'd me navigate the troubled times,
When little world of mine was shuttered and ruin'd,
When I was push'd to learn, to live and rhyme,
And find the balance of restrain and doing.
He is as modern and as versatile
As those Greek stoics that he chose as teachers -
No matter how the society declines,
Such giants appear among the sinful creatures.
I work towards the same sincere goal:
To understand the major human role.
