Investigating cultures and epochs,
We learn to understand our fellow humans
That lived so many centuries ago
And keep on living in their books and rumours.
They had no sewage, radio or rail,
They lived in squalid, inhuman conditions,
But higher goals never were betray'd:
They knew, indeed, the sole human mission.
With a life span of a modern youngish man,
Who only starts to be less wry and snobbish,
They manag'd, in the given time domain,
So much to understand and to accomplish.
How do we dare to despise those times?
Unlike today, they fought the human vice.
