The heritage of the crusading knights
Is dubious and variable in total:
Some were the mercantile, aggressive brats,
Who ruin'd and ransack'd Constantinople.
Some were mean usurers of horrid interest,
Who piped wealth against the Christian laws;
Philipe the Beautiful attempted to suppress
And was destroy'd by their foul blows.
The noble order of hospitaliers
Has been providing care for the wounded;
They thrive in London, Rome, Jerusalem,
In Malta, Rhodes - commonly approv'd.
The nobler cause, the longer the tradition ---
Thus selflessness brings a lasting recognition.
