Those many names and faces, pass'd away
In their short lives, established the beacons
Of art and culture that would since remain
The greatest, such as Mozart, Goethe, Dickens.
Their work created standards of the scale
That is too grand to ever be surpassed;
They elevated men from dirt and clay
To high humanity's complexity and facets.
The recent arts do not pursue that goal,
They focus on the mere entertainment.
Exotic stories, heroes of football
Are modern inspirations for attainment.
Degrading arts are saddest to observe -
What they achieve and what ideals serve?
