When Handel came from Germany to England
His country was a discretised mess:
Barons and princes were satrapic bigots,
With silly and short-sighted interests.
He could have served, as Bach, in local churches,
Where Passacaliae would soothe communal pains,
Where his exquisitely harmonic orchards
Most likely, would be sounding in vain.
Instead, he came to serve the grand empire,
Where monarchy'd achiev'd the stage of peak,
Where a genius was needed and desir'd,
Where he deserv'd the history's verdict.
Zadok the Priest, the masterpiece of grandeur,
Required both - the monarchy and Handel.
